Turkish Delight, also known as lokum, is a popular sweet treat in Turkey and around the world. This traditional recipe uses simple ingredients like sugar, cornstarch, and rosewater to create a soft and chewy candy bursting with flavor. With just a few easy steps, you can make your own Turkish Delight at home and impress your friends and family.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons rosewater
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Chopped nuts or coconut (optional, for coating)

Directions

  1. In a large saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and water. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar has dissolved.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and enough water to make a smooth paste. Slowly add the cornstarch mixture to the sugar syrup, stirring constantly.
  3. Cook the mixture over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until it thickens and becomes translucent. This will take about 30-40 minutes.
  4. Stir in the lemon juice and rosewater. If desired, add a few drops of food coloring to enhance the presentation of your Turkish Delight.
  5. Pour the mixture into a greased square baking dish and smooth the top with a spatula. Let it cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until set.
  6. Once set, remove the Turkish Delight from the refrigerator and use a sharp knife to cut it into small squares or rectangles.
  7. Roll each piece in powdered sugar to prevent sticking. If desired, coat the pieces with chopped nuts or coconut for added texture and flavor.
  8. Store the Turkish Delight in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. Enjoy!
