Turkish Delight, also known as lokum, is a popular sweet treat in Turkey and around the world. This traditional recipe uses simple ingredients like sugar, cornstarch, and rosewater to create a soft and chewy candy bursting with flavor. With just a few easy steps, you can make your own Turkish Delight at home and impress your friends and family.
Ingredients
- 3 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 teaspoons rosewater
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- Food coloring (optional)
- Chopped nuts or coconut (optional, for coating)
Directions
- In a large saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and water. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar has dissolved.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and enough water to make a smooth paste. Slowly add the cornstarch mixture to the sugar syrup, stirring constantly.
- Cook the mixture over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until it thickens and becomes translucent. This will take about 30-40 minutes.
- Stir in the lemon juice and rosewater. If desired, add a few drops of food coloring to enhance the presentation of your Turkish Delight.
- Pour the mixture into a greased square baking dish and smooth the top with a spatula. Let it cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until set.
- Once set, remove the Turkish Delight from the refrigerator and use a sharp knife to cut it into small squares or rectangles.
- Roll each piece in powdered sugar to prevent sticking. If desired, coat the pieces with chopped nuts or coconut for added texture and flavor.
- Store the Turkish Delight in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. Enjoy!
