Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and oil over low heat. Stir in flour and sugar. Remove from heat and let cool.
In a large bowl, beat the eggs until light and fluffy. Add the cooled butter mixture, applesauce, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, nutmeg, buttermilk, and vanilla. Stir until well blended.
Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
Remove from oven and let cool before serving.
