Ingredients

  • For the dough:
  • - 1 cup active sourdough starter
  • - 1/2 cup warm milk
  • - 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • - 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • - 2 large eggs
  • - 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • - 1 teaspoon salt
  • - 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • For the filling:
  • - 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • - 1 cup brown sugar
  • - 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • For the glaze:
  • - 1 cup powdered sugar
  • - 2 tablespoons milk
  • - 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the active sourdough starter, warm milk, granulated sugar, melted butter, and eggs. Mix well.
  2. Add the flour, salt, and baking soda to the bowl. Stir until the dough comes together.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and roll it out into a large rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
  6. Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough. Sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon on top.
  7. Starting from one long end, tightly roll the dough into a log. Cut the log into 12 equal-sized pieces.
  8. Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, leaving some space between each roll. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  10. Bake the cinnamon rolls for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  11. While the rolls are baking, prepare the glaze by whisking together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a small bowl.
  12. Once the cinnamon rolls are out of the oven, drizzle them with the glaze.
  13. Serve warm and enjoy!
