Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
In a large bowl, cream together the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the molasses and egg. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt. Gradually blend the dry ingredients into the molasses mixture.
Roll the dough into walnut sized balls, and roll the balls in white sugar. Place the cookies 2 inches apart on the prepared cookie sheets, and flatten each cookie slightly. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
