Ingredients

  • For the dough:
  • - 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • - 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • - 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • - 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • - 1/4 cup cold water
  • For the fruit filling:
  • - 2 cups fresh or frozen fruits (such as apples, peaches, cherries, or berries)
  • - 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • - 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • - 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • - 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • - Vegetable oil, for frying
  • - Powdered sugar, for dusting

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt for the dough. Add the cubed butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Gradually add the cold water, a tablespoon at a time, and mix until the dough comes together.
  3. Divide the dough into two equal portions and shape each portion into a disk. Wrap them in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  4. In a separate bowl, prepare the fruit filling by combining the fruits, sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch, and cinnamon. Mix well until the fruits are evenly coated.
  5. Preheat vegetable oil in a deep pan or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  6. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one portion of the dough into a 1/8-inch thickness. Using a round cookie cutter or a glass, cut out circles of dough, approximately 4-5 inches in diameter.
  7. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the fruit filling onto the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape.
  8. Use a fork to seal the edges of the pie by pressing them together. This will also create a decorative pattern.
  9. Carefully place each pie into the preheated oil and fry until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  10. Remove the fried pies from the oil and let them drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  11. Repeat steps 6-10 with the remaining dough and fruit filling.
  12. Once the fried fruit pies have cooled slightly, dust them with powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness.
  13. Serve the fried fruit pies warm and enjoy!
