Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x5 inch loaf pan.
In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt. Set aside.
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, then stir in the molasses and hot water. Gradually stir the flour mixture into the molasses mixture until just blended.
Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 45 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean.
Let cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack.
