Ingredients

  • Cabbage leaves
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup uncooked long-grain rice
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup water

Directions

  1. Place the cabbage in a large pot of boiling water and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the leaves are tender. Remove the cabbage from the pot and let it cool. Once cooled, carefully remove the leaves, being careful not to tear them.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, rice, onion, egg, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined.
  3. Place a spoonful of the ground beef mixture onto each cabbage leaf and roll it up, tucking in the sides as you go. Place the cabbage rolls seam-side down in a baking dish.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together the tomato sauce, brown sugar, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and water. Pour the sauce over the cabbage rolls.
  5. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 1 hour.
  6. After 1 hour, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cabbage rolls are cooked through and the sauce is thickened.
