Ingredients

  • 225g self-raising flour
  • 40g butter, chilled and cubed
  • 25g caster sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of black treacle
  • 120ml milk
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • Clotted cream and jam, to serve

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 220°C and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the self-raising flour, baking powder, salt, and caster sugar.
  3. Rub the chilled butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  4. In a separate small bowl, warm the milk in the microwave for about 20 seconds.
  5. Add the black treacle to the warmed milk and stir until well combined.
  6. Make a well in the dry ingredients and pour in the treacle-milk mixture.
  7. Using a fork, gently mix the wet and dry ingredients together until a soft dough forms.
  8. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times to bring it together.
  9. Roll the dough out to a thickness of about 2cm.
  10. Using a floured round cutter, cut out scones and place them onto the lined baking tray.
  11. Gather any remaining dough scraps, re-roll, and cut out more scones.
  12. Brush the tops of the scones with a little milk for a golden finish.
  13. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until the scones have risen and are golden brown.
  14. Remove from the oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool slightly.
  15. Serve the scones warm with clotted cream and your favorite jam.
