This General Tso's tofu recipe is a tasty and healthier alternative to the traditional dish. The tofu is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, coated in a sweet, savory, and slightly spicy sauce. It's perfect for a weeknight dinner or a weekend treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 block extra firm tofu, pressed and cubed
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 inch piece of ginger, minced
  • 1/2 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water
  • Green onions, sliced, for garnish
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish

Directions

  1. In a bowl, toss the cubed tofu with cornstarch until evenly coated.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and cook until crispy and golden brown on all sides. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add more oil if needed and sauté the garlic and ginger until fragrant.
  4. Add soy sauce, rice vinegar, water, hoisin sauce, and maple syrup to the skillet. Stir to combine.
  5. Add the cornstarch-water mixture to the skillet and cook until the sauce thickens.
  6. Return the tofu to the skillet, coating it evenly with the sauce. Cook for a few more minutes.
  7. Serve the General Tso's tofu over rice and garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds.
