Ingredients

  • 1 package extra-firm tofu
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon chili paste
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup toasted sesame seeds, for garnish

Directions

  1. Drain and press the tofu, then cut into cubes.
  2. In a bowl, mix together the flour, garlic powder, ginger, pepper, and salt.
  3. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Dredge the tofu cubes in the flour mixture, shaking off any excess.
  5. Fry the tofu cubes in the hot oil for about 4 minutes, or until golden and crispy.
  6. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set aside.
  7. In a small bowl, whisk together the hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil, brown sugar, garlic, chili paste, and water.
  8. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of water.
  9. Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet and bring to a simmer.
  10. Stir in the cornstarch mixture, stirring constantly until thickened.
  11. Return the tofu to the skillet and stir to coat.
  12. Garnish with toasted sesame seeds and serve.
