Ingredients
- 1 package extra-firm tofu
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon chili paste
- 2 tablespoons water
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1/4 cup toasted sesame seeds, for garnish
Directions
- Drain and press the tofu, then cut into cubes.
- In a bowl, mix together the flour, garlic powder, ginger, pepper, and salt.
- Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Dredge the tofu cubes in the flour mixture, shaking off any excess.
- Fry the tofu cubes in the hot oil for about 4 minutes, or until golden and crispy.
- Remove the tofu from the skillet and set aside.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil, brown sugar, garlic, chili paste, and water.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of water.
- Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet and bring to a simmer.
- Stir in the cornstarch mixture, stirring constantly until thickened.
- Return the tofu to the skillet and stir to coat.
- Garnish with toasted sesame seeds and serve.
