This traditional homemade yogurt recipe will teach you how to make delicious, creamy yogurt right in your own kitchen. With just a few simple ingredients and some patience, you can create a tangy and velvety yogurt that is perfect for eating on its own or using in various dishes. Say goodbye to store-bought yogurt and hello to the rich flavors of homemade goodness.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt with active cultures (as a starter)

Directions

  1. Pour the milk into a large saucepan and heat it over medium-low heat until it reaches a temperature of 180°F (82°C). Stir occasionally to prevent scorching.
  2. Once the milk reaches the desired temperature, remove it from the heat and allow it to cool to 110°F (43°C). You can speed up the cooling process by placing the saucepan in an ice bath.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the plain yogurt and a small amount of the cooled milk to temper it. This will help the yogurt incorporate better into the rest of the mixture.
  4. Pour the tempered yogurt mixture into the remaining cooled milk and whisk until well combined.
  5. Cover the saucepan with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and place it in a warm spot in your kitchen. Let the mixture sit undisturbed for 6-8 hours, or until it thickens and develops a tangy taste. The longer you let it sit, the thicker and tangier it will become.
  6. Once the yogurt has reached your desired taste and consistency, refrigerate it for at least 4 hours to allow it to fully set.
  7. Serve the traditional homemade yogurt cold and enjoy it as is or add your favorite toppings and mix-ins. It can also be used as a base for smoothies, dressings, or sauces.
