Enjoy the taste of traditional American bread pretzels with this easy-to-follow recipe. These soft and chewy pretzels are perfect for snacking or serving as an appetizer. The dough is made from simple ingredients like flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. After shaping the pretzels, they are boiled in a baking soda solution to achieve a golden and pretzel-like crust. Serve them hot with mustard or cheese dip for a delightful treat.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • ¼ cup baking soda
  • Coarse salt, for sprinkling

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Mix well.
  2. Add warm water gradually while stirring, until the dough comes together.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead it for about 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  4. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add the baking soda.
  7. Divide the risen dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope about 20 inches long and twist it into a pretzel shape.
  8. Carefully drop each pretzel into the boiling water and cook for about 30 seconds. Remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Sprinkle the pretzels with coarse salt and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  10. Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm with mustard or cheese dip.
