Ingredients

  • 2 (15-ounce) cans French-style green beans, drained
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup finely chopped onions
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 (12-ounce) can evaporated milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 cups (6 ounces) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup dry bread crumbs
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Gradually stir in evaporated milk and garlic powder. Cook until thickened, about 7 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in 1 cup of cheese.
  6. In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, layer half of the green beans, followed by the cheese sauce. Top with remaining green beans.
  7. In a small bowl, combine bread crumbs and remaining cheese. Sprinkle over green beans.
  8. Bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown.
