Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch pan.
In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt.
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk.
Fold in the chopped dried fruit and nuts. Spread batter evenly into the prepared pan.
Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup sugar over the top of the cake. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a knife inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
