Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon water

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add the sugar, vegetable oil, eggs, and salt to the bowl, and mix well.
  3. Gradually stir in 4 cups of flour until the dough comes together.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 6-8 minutes, adding the remaining 1/2 cup of flour as needed to prevent sticking. The dough should become smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  6. Punch down the risen dough and knead in the raisins until evenly distributed.
  7. Divide the dough into 3 equal parts and roll each part into a long rope, about 18 inches in length.
  8. Pinch the ends of the ropes together and braid them tightly, tucking the ends under the loaf.
  9. Place the braided loaf on a greased baking sheet, cover it with the kitchen towel, and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  11. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and water. Brush this mixture over the risen loaf.
  12. Bake the challah in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until it turns golden brown.
  13. Remove the challah from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before serving.
