Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add vanilla extract and mix until combined.
In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix until all ingredients are combined.
If desired, stir in the chopped nuts.
Drop by teaspoonfuls onto an ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until edges are lightly golden brown.
Remove from oven and let cool completely.
