Ingredients

  • 4 ounces butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Cream butter and sugar together in a large bowl.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract, cocoa powder, and red food coloring.
  5. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour and baking soda.
  6. Add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk.
  7. Stir in the vinegar.
  8. Pour the batter into a greased 9-inch round cake pan.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Allow the cake to cool before frosting.
