Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Food coloring (red, yellow, green, blue)
  • 3 cups buttercream frosting
  • Colored sprinkles

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
  4. Add flour mixture and milk alternately to the wet ingredients, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Stir until just combined.
  5. Divide batter evenly into four separate bowls. Add a different food coloring to each bowl and stir until combined.
  6. Pour each colored batter into the prepared pans. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before turning out onto a cooling rack.
  8. Once cakes are completely cooled, assemble the layers. Spread a layer of frosting between each cake layer. Spread remaining frosting over the top and sides of cake.
  9. Finish off the cake with a generous helping of colored sprinkles.
