Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup whole milk
- Food coloring (red, yellow, green, blue)
- 3 cups buttercream frosting
- Colored sprinkles
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
- Add flour mixture and milk alternately to the wet ingredients, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Stir until just combined.
- Divide batter evenly into four separate bowls. Add a different food coloring to each bowl and stir until combined.
- Pour each colored batter into the prepared pans. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before turning out onto a cooling rack.
- Once cakes are completely cooled, assemble the layers. Spread a layer of frosting between each cake layer. Spread remaining frosting over the top and sides of cake.
- Finish off the cake with a generous helping of colored sprinkles.
