In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture is crumbly.
In a separate bowl, mix together the pumpkin puree, buttermilk, and vanilla extract. Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead lightly until the dough comes together. Pat the dough out into a 7-inch circle and cut into 8 wedges. Place the wedges onto a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack.
