Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease an 8 inch square baking pan.
In a medium bowl, combine apples, brown sugar, white sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and allspice. Mix together until apples are evenly coated.
In a separate bowl, combine flour, melted butter, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix together until a crumbly dough forms.
Spread half of the apple mixture in the prepared baking pan. Sprinkle with half of the flour mixture, then top with remaining apples. Sprinkle with remaining flour mixture and top with walnuts, if desired.
Bake in preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes, or until top is golden brown.
Allow to cool before serving.
