Not Your Momma's Vanilla Extract

  • 2 vanilla beans
  • 1/4 cup of vodka, white rum, or bourbon
  • 1/2 cup of distilled water
  • 1 mason jar with lid


  1. Split the vanilla beans lengthwise using a sharp knife. Scrape out the inside and add the seeds and beans to the mason jar.
  2. Add the vodka, white rum, or bourbon to the mason jar.
  3. Fill the mason jar with distilled water and screw the lid on tightly.
  4. Shake the jar for a few seconds to combine the ingredients.
  5. Store the mason jar in a cool, dark place for at least two weeks, shaking it once a day to help the mixture combine.
  6. After two weeks, the extract is ready to use. Strain the mixture to remove the vanilla bean pieces and store the extract in a cool, dark place.
