Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons white sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, salt and sugar. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
In a separate bowl, beat the egg and stir in the buttermilk. Add to the flour mixture and mix until just combined.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for 1 minute. Pat out into a round and place in the prepared pan.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean.
