Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, salt and sugar. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg and stir in the buttermilk. Add to the flour mixture and mix until just combined.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for 1 minute. Pat out into a round and place in the prepared pan.
  5. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean.
