Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water (filtered if possible)
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour

Directions

  1. Day 1: In a large glass or ceramic container, combine 1/2 cup all-purpose flour and 1/2 cup warm water. Mix well until there are no lumps. Cover loosely with a clean kitchen towel and let it sit at room temperature for 24 hours.
  2. Day 2: Discard half of the starter (approximately 1/2 cup). Add 1/4 cup all-purpose flour and 1/4 cup warm water to the remaining starter. Mix well, cover, and let it sit for another 24 hours.
  3. Day 3: Repeat the process from Day Discard half of the starter, then add 1/4 cup all-purpose flour and 1/4 cup warm water. Mix well, cover, and let it sit for 24 hours.
  4. Day 4: By now, you should start seeing some bubbles and signs of fermentation. Repeat the process from Day 2, discarding half of the starter and adding another 1/4 cup all-purpose flour and 1/4 cup warm water. Mix well, cover, and let it sit for 24 hours.
  5. Day 5: Your sourdough starter should be active and ready to use. It should have a pleasant, tangy aroma and be full of bubbles. If not, repeat the process from Day 2 for another day or two until you achieve the desired results. The starter is now ready to be used in your favorite sourdough bread recipes.
