Ingredients

  • 12 apples (a mix of sweet and tart varieties)
  • 1 orange
  • 1 lemon
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 8 cups water

Directions

  1. Wash and quarter the apples, making sure to remove the cores.
  2. Cut the orange and lemon into slices.
  3. In a large pot, add the quartered apples, orange slices, lemon slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, nutmeg, and brown sugar.
  4. Pour the water into the pot and bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
  5. Once boiling, reduce the heat and let the cider simmer for about 45 minutes, or until the apples are soft and mushy.
  6. Remove the pot from heat and let it cool slightly.
  7. Using a potato masher or a spoon, mash the softened apples in the pot to release more juice and flavor.
  8. Place a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth over a large bowl or pitcher.
  9. Slowly pour the cider mixture into the strainer, allowing the liquid to separate from the pulp and spices.
  10. Press down on the solids in the strainer to extract as much juice as possible.
  11. Discard the solids and spices left in the strainer.
  12. Serve the warm cider in mugs, garnished with a cinnamon stick or a slice of orange, if desired.
  13. Enjoy the homemade Smitty's Apple Cider!
