Enjoy the comforting taste of homemade oatmeal bread with Granny's special recipe. This bread is made with wholesome ingredients like rolled oats, whole wheat flour, and honey, resulting in a moist and flavorful loaf. Perfect for sandwiches or toast, this oatmeal bread will quickly become a family favorite.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 5 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons salt

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the rolled oats and boiling water. Let it sit for 10 minutes to soften the oats.
  2. In a separate small bowl, dissolve the honey in warm water. Sprinkle the yeast over the honey mixture and let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, whole wheat flour, vegetable oil, and salt to the oat mixture. Stir until the dough comes together.
  4. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead it for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it in half. Shape each portion into a loaf and place them in greased 9x5-inch loaf pans.
  7. Cover the pans with the kitchen towel again and let the dough rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Bake the loaves for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  10. Remove the bread from the pans and let it cool completely on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
