Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 2 eggs, separated
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar for garnish

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  2. In a separate bowl, cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the egg yolks, milk, and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and mix until combined.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form.
  6. Fold the egg whites into the dough until just combined.
  7. Fill a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven with 2-3 inches of vegetable oil and heat to 350 degrees F (176 degrees C).
  8. Drop the dough by the teaspoonful into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  9. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  10. Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar before serving.
