This sweet and sour stuffed cabbage recipe is a classic American dish that combines the flavors of tender cabbage leaves, seasoned ground beef, and a tangy sauce. It is a hearty and satisfying meal that can be enjoyed for lunch or dinner. The dish requires some preparation time, but the end result is well worth it. Serve the stuffed cabbage with rice or mashed potatoes for a complete meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup raisins

Directions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage and place the whole head in the boiling water. Cook for 5 minutes, then remove from the water and let cool. Carefully peel off the leaves, making sure to keep them intact. Trim the tough ribs from each leaf.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, diced onion, minced garlic, beaten egg, breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  3. Take a cabbage leaf and place a spoonful of the ground beef mixture in the center. Roll up the leaf, tucking in the sides as you go, to form a tight bundle. Repeat with the remaining cabbage leaves and filling.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the tomato sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, lemon juice, and raisins. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
  5. Place the stuffed cabbage rolls in a large baking dish. Pour the sweet and sour sauce over the rolls, making sure they are fully covered.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  7. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cabbage rolls are cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
  8. Serve the sweet and sour stuffed cabbage hot, spooning the sauce over each roll. Enjoy!
