Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk, warmed
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup chopped almonds
  • 1/4 cup candied orange peel
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Sliced almonds for topping

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warmed milk, sugar, and melted butter. Stir until sugar is dissolved.
  2. Add the yeast and let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. Stir in 2 cups of flour, salt, cardamom, and cinnamon. Mix well.
  4. Add the raisins, chopped almonds, and candied orange peel. Mix in the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour until doubled in size.
  7. Punch down the dough and shape it into a round loaf. Place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Cover the loaf with a towel and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  10. Mix the beaten egg with water and brush it over the top of the loaf. Sprinkle sliced almonds on top.
  11. Bake the Jule-Kaka for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. Let it cool before slicing and serving.
