Ingredients
- 1 cup broken wheat
- 2 tablespoons ghee or vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 green chili, finely chopped
- 1/2 inch ginger, grated
- 8-10 curry leaves
- 1 carrot, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup green peas
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 3 cups water
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 2 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves
- 1 tablespoon grated coconut, for garnish (optional)
Directions
- Dry roast the broken wheat in a pan over medium heat until golden brown and fragrant. Set aside.
- Heat ghee or vegetable oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
- Add cumin seeds, asafoetida, chopped onion, green chili, grated ginger, and curry leaves. Saute until onions turn translucent.
- Add chopped carrot, green peas, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well.
- Add roasted broken wheat and water. Mix everything together.
- Cover the pan and simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until the broken wheat is cooked and water is absorbed.
- Turn off the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes. Fluff up the upma with a fork.
- Drizzle lemon juice over the upma and garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
- Serve hot, garnished with grated coconut if desired.
