This recipe for Papa Drexler's Bavarian Pretzels will teach you how to make authentic Bavarian pretzels in the comfort of your own kitchen. These pretzels are soft, chewy, and perfectly salted, just like the ones you find in Germany. Enjoy them as a snack or with your favorite dips.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • Coarse salt for sprinkling

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture and knead until a smooth dough forms. Let it rise for 1 hour.
  3. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  4. Divide the dough into 8 pieces and roll each piece into a rope. Shape into pretzels and let rest for 10 minutes.
  5. In a large pot, bring water and baking soda to a simmer. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds and place on the baking sheet.
  6. Sprinkle coarse salt over the pretzels and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Enjoy warm with mustard or cheese dip.
