Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the cold butter pieces and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Add the cold water gradually and mix until the dough comes together.
  3. Shape the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  4. In a skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  5. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until the onion is soft and translucent.
  6. Stir in the cumin, paprika, chili powder, oregano, salt, and pepper. Cook for another minute. Remove from heat and let the filling cool.
  7. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Divide the dough in half. Roll out one half on a floured surface to fit the bottom of a pie dish.
  9. Transfer the rolled-out dough to the pie dish, pressing it into the bottom and sides.
  10. Fill the pie crust with the cooled beef filling.
  11. Roll out the remaining dough and place it over the filling. Seal the edges by crimping with your fingers or pressing with a fork.
  12. Brush the top crust with beaten egg to create a golden brown color.
  13. Bake the empanada pie for 30-35 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.
  14. Allow the pie to cool for a few minutes before serving. Slice and enjoy!
