Indulge in these classic long johns, a popular American pastry that features a soft, yeasted dough filled with sweet cream and topped with chocolate frosting. These decadent treats are perfect for breakfast, dessert, or anytime you're craving something sweet.

Ingredients

  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 1/2 - 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • Oil for frying
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tbsp butter

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water with a pinch of sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together sugar, milk, melted butter, egg, and salt. Stir in yeast mixture.
  3. Gradually add flour until a soft dough forms. Knead dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
  5. Roll out dough on a floured surface and cut into long oval shapes. Let rise for another 30 minutes.
  6. Heat oil in a deep fryer to 375°F. Fry long johns in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  7. Whip heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks form. Fill a piping bag with cream.
  8. Pipe cream into the center of each long john.
  9. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt chocolate chips and butter in 30-second intervals until smooth. Dip tops of long johns in chocolate.
  10. Let chocolate set before serving. Enjoy your homemade classic long johns!
