Indulge in a crispy and flavorful blooming onion dish served with a tangy dipping sauce. This recipe will guide you step-by-step to create a restaurant-quality appetizer at home. The blooming onion is made by cutting a whole onion to resemble a blooming flower, then battering and deep frying it to perfection. The accompanying sauce perfectly complements the crispiness of the onion. It's a crowd-pleaser that will leave everyone wanting more!

Ingredients

  • 1 large onion
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • For the dipping sauce:
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon horseradish
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

  1. Cut off a small portion from the top and bottom of the onion. Peel off the outer skin, but leave the root intact. Place the onion, cut side down, and make vertical cuts towards the center of the onion, stopping about 1/2 inch from the root. Repeat this process around the onion until you have created 'petals'.
  2. In a shallow dish, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  3. In another shallow dish, pour the buttermilk.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
  5. Dip the onion into the flour mixture, making sure it is well coated.
  6. Shake off any excess flour and then dip it into the buttermilk.
  7. Return the onion to the flour mixture and coat it again, pressing the flour mixture into the petals to make sure they are well coated.
  8. Carefully place the coated onion into the hot oil, root side up.
  9. Fry the onion for about 3 to 4 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Flip the onion halfway through cooking to ensure even browning.
  10. Remove the blooming onion from the oil and let it drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  11. In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper to make the dipping sauce.
  12. Serve the blooming onion with the tangy dipping sauce on the side.
  13. Enjoy the crispy, flavorful blooming onion by pulling out the petals and dipping them into the sauce!
