Ingredients

  • 4 pounds beef short ribs
  • 1 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 cup beef broth

Directions

  1. Place the beef short ribs in a large bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the red wine vinegar, water, chopped onion, minced garlic, vegetable oil, flour, brown sugar, mustard, salt, black pepper, ground ginger, ground cloves, and the bay leaf. Mix well.
  3. Pour the marinade over the beef ribs, making sure they are well coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for best results.
  4. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit (165 degrees Celsius).
  5. Remove the ribs from the marinade, reserving the marinade.
  6. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the ribs. Brown the ribs on all sides, then transfer them to a baking dish.
  7. Pour the reserved marinade and beef broth over the ribs in the baking dish.
  8. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 3 hours, or until the ribs are tender and easily fall off the bone.
  9. Once cooked, remove the ribs from the baking dish and keep warm.
  10. Strain the cooking liquid from the baking dish into a saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat.
  11. In a small bowl, mix together 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour with 2 tablespoons of water to make a slurry. Stir the slurry into the boiling sauce, whisking constantly until the sauce thickens.
  12. Serve the beef short ribs sauerbraten with the thickened sauce on the side.
  13. Enjoy!
