Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, room temperature
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons heavy cream
  • Food coloring, optional

Directions

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer (or using a hand mixer), cream the butter until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, until all is incorporated. Scrape down the sides of the bowl if necessary.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and heavy cream and mix until combined.
  4. For colored frosting, add a few drops of food coloring at this time and mix until desired color is reached.
  5. Transfer the frosting to a pastry bag or a large zip-top bag with the corner snipped off.
  6. Pipe the frosting onto your cakes or cookies.
