Ingredients

  • 1 cup chopped dried figs
  • 1 cup chopped pitted dates
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the chopped figs and dates. Pour boiling water over the fruits and let them sit for 10 minutes to soften.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs to the butter mixture one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the soaked figs and dates. Mix until just combined.
  7. Fold in the chopped walnuts.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
  9. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the bread comes out clean.
  10. Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
  11. Transfer the bread to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.
