Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 8 hot dogs
  • 8 wooden skewers

Directions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk, and vegetable oil.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and whisk until combined.
  4. Heat the oil in a large, deep skillet over medium heat.
  5. Insert a wooden skewer into each hot dog, then dip into the batter.
  6. Fry the corn dogs in the hot oil for 4-5 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown.
  7. Remove the corn dogs from the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  8. Serve hot with your favorite condiments.
