This classic Texas Sheet Cake is a rich and moist chocolate cake topped with a decadent chocolate frosting. It's easy to make and perfect for feeding a crowd. The cake is baked in a large sheet pan, making it ideal for potlucks, parties, or any gathering. The frosting is made with butter, cocoa powder, and powdered sugar, giving it a smooth and creamy texture. This dessert is a favorite in Texas and beyond, and once you try it, you'll understand why.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Frosting:
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 15x10 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda.
  3. In a small saucepan, combine the butter, water, and cocoa powder. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the butter has melted and the mixture is smooth. Remove from heat.
  4. Pour the warm cocoa mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until well combined.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Add this mixture to the cocoa mixture and mix until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. While the cake is baking, prepare the frosting. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the cocoa powder, milk, and vanilla extract. Stir until well combined.
  9. Remove the saucepan from heat and gradually whisk in the powdered sugar until the frosting is smooth and thick.
  10. If desired, stir in chopped pecans or walnuts into the frosting.
  11. When the cake is done baking, remove it from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes.
  12. Pour the frosting over the warm cake and spread it evenly, covering the entire surface.
  13. Allow the cake to cool completely before serving. Cut into squares and enjoy!
