Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 2 (28-ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 bay leaf

Directions

  1. In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, sauté until softened.
  2. Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the pot. Cook until browned and no longer pink.
  3. Drain excess fat from the meat.
  4. Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and red wine to the pot. Stir until well combined.
  5. Add the fresh basil, parsley, oregano, sugar, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and bay leaf. Stir to combine.
  6. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it cook for at least 1 hour, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  7. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
  8. Remove the bay leaf before serving the sauce over cooked spaghetti.
  9. Garnish with additional fresh basil and Parmesan cheese, if desired.
