Ingredients
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
- 2 (28-ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
- 1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste
- 1/2 cup red wine
- 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 tablespoon dried oregano
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1 bay leaf
Directions
- In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, sauté until softened.
- Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the pot. Cook until browned and no longer pink.
- Drain excess fat from the meat.
- Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and red wine to the pot. Stir until well combined.
- Add the fresh basil, parsley, oregano, sugar, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and bay leaf. Stir to combine.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it cook for at least 1 hour, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
- Remove the bay leaf before serving the sauce over cooked spaghetti.
- Garnish with additional fresh basil and Parmesan cheese, if desired.
