Ingredients

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups milk
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until it becomes translucent.
  3. Add the flour to the saucepan and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  4. Slowly pour in the milk while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Cook the mixture until it thickens and becomes creamy.
  5. Stir in 1 1/2 cups of the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and well combined. Season the sauce with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  6. In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes and sauce.
  7. Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil, sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese on top, and sprinkle with paprika.
  9. Bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is golden and bubbly.
