Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the sugars and butter until light and fluffy.
  3. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each one. Stir in vanilla.
  4. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa, baking soda, salt, and chili powder.
  5. Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture.
  6. Mix in the chocolate chips and nuts, if desired.
  7. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto ungreased baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until cookies are set. Allow to cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
