This comforting side dish is perfect for holiday gatherings or weeknight dinners. Layers of thinly sliced sweet potatoes are baked in a luscious cream sauce infused with garlic, thyme, and nutmeg. Topped with melted cheese and breadcrumbs, this gratin is a decadent treat for your taste buds.

Ingredients

  • 4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp fresh thyme leaves
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, combine heavy cream, garlic, thyme, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  3. Arrange a layer of sweet potatoes in the baking dish. Pour some of the cream mixture over the potatoes and sprinkle with some Gruyere and Parmesan cheese. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used up, ending with cheese on top.
  4. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and sprinkle breadcrumbs on top. Drizzle melted butter over breadcrumbs.
  5. Bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender and top is golden brown.
  6. Let cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
