Ingredients

  • 8 lasagna noodles
  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef or Italian sausage over medium heat until browned. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, and cook until the onion is translucent.
  4. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes, until the flavors meld together.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, and egg. Mix well.
  6. Spread a spoonful of the meat sauce onto the bottom of a baking dish.
  7. Lay one lasagna noodle on a clean surface and spread a thin layer of the ricotta cheese mixture along the length of the noodle. Roll the noodle up tightly and place it seam-side down in the baking dish.
  8. Repeat with the remaining noodles and cheese mixture.
  9. Pour the remaining meat sauce over the lasagna roll ups, making sure they are well covered. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the top.
  10. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  11. Garnish with fresh basil leaves and serve hot.
