Ingredients

  • 12 corn tortillas
  • 1 pound of thinly sliced steak
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon of chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1 cup of shredded lettuce
  • 1/2 cup of chopped tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup of sour cream
  • 1/4 cup of chopped cilantro
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges
  • Guacamole and salsa, for serving

Directions

  1. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic. Sauté until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
  2. Season the thinly sliced steak with cumin, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Add the seasoned steak to the skillet and cook until browned and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes.
  3. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  4. In a baking dish, spread a thin layer of the cooked steak and vegetable mixture. Place a single layer of corn tortillas on top, covering the mixture.
  5. Repeat the layering process, alternating between the steak mixture and tortillas, until all the ingredients are used. Finish with a layer of tortillas on top.
  6. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the torta is heated through and the flavors meld together.
  7. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes to crisp up the top layer of tortillas.
  8. Remove the torta from the oven and let it cool slightly before slicing into squares.
  9. Serve the Torta de Hojas with shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, sour cream, chopped cilantro, lime wedges, guacamole, and salsa.
