Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour one 9x5 inch loaf pan.
In a large bowl, stir together applesauce, melted butter, sugar and eggs until well blended.
In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Stir the dry ingredients into the applesauce mixture until just blended.
Stir in the chopped nuts, if desired. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan.
Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean.
Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
