Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and the buttermilk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  5. Stir in the hot water until the batter is smooth. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. To make the frosting, cream together the butter and cocoa powder until smooth. Alternate adding the powdered sugar and milk, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
