Ingredients

  • 1 pound split peas
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 stalks celery, diced
  • 8 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 pound cooked ham, diced

Directions

  1. In a large saucepan, combine split peas, onion, garlic, carrots, celery, broth, bay leaves, thyme, pepper, and nutmeg. Bring to a boil over high heat.
  2. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the split peas are tender.
  3. Stir in the diced ham and cook for an additional 15 minutes.
  4. Discard the bay leaves and serve hot.
