Ingredients

  • 6 slices of bacon, chopped
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 head of cabbage, shredded
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Directions

  1. In a large skillet or frying pan, cook the bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon from the pan and set aside, leaving the bacon grease in the pan.
  2. Add the sliced onion to the pan and sauté until caramelized, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the sliced mushrooms to the pan and sauté until softened and golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, in a separate pot, bring water to a boil and cook the shredded cabbage for 3-4 minutes until slightly tender. Drain well.
  5. Add the cooked cabbage to the skillet with the mushrooms and onions. Season with salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper (if using). Stir to combine.
  6. Push the cabbage mixture to the side of the skillet and add the butter to the empty space. Allow the butter to melt and coat the bottom of the pan.
  7. Mix the cabbage with the melted butter and continue cooking for an additional 5-7 minutes, until the cabbage is fully tender and the flavors are well combined.
  8. Sprinkle the cooked bacon on top of the cabbage mixture and stir to incorporate.
  9. Serve hot as a flavorful side dish with your favorite Southern-style meal.
