These cabbage rolls are a traditional Slovak dish made with a savory filling of ground meat, rice, and spices, wrapped in tender cabbage leaves and simmered in a rich tomato sauce. Perfectly balanced flavors and textures make this dish a true crowd-pleaser!

Ingredients

  • 1 large head of green cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp caraway seeds
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core of the cabbage and place it in the boiling water. Cook for about 5 minutes, until the outer leaves are softened. Remove and let cool.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, onion, garlic, paprika, caraway seeds, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  3. Carefully peel off the softened cabbage leaves. Place a spoonful of the meat mixture in the center of each leaf and roll it up, tucking the sides in as you go. Place the rolls seam side down in a baking dish.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together the tomato sauce, beef broth, brown sugar, and apple cider vinegar. Pour the sauce over the cabbage rolls.
  5. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, until the sauce is thickened and bubbly.
  6. Serve the stuffed cabbage rolls hot, with a side of mashed potatoes or crusty bread. Enjoy!
