Ingredients

  • 1 lb. Italian sausage
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 lb. penne pasta, cooked according to package instructions
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Directions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned, about 8 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes.
  4. Add the cooked pasta to the skillet and toss to coat with the sauce.
  5. Serve with Parmesan cheese (if using).
